Drumlins 4.0 Team Gets To Eastern Section Championships Again
SYRACUSE, NY, October 2, 2009 - The 4.0 "Sweet Spots" representing Drumlins Tennis Club played their way to the USTA/Eastern Sectional Championships for the second year in a row!!
Captained by Lesley Grants and co-captained by Mara Roberts, the team played hard all during the local season facing some tough competition and was able to come out on top. The second from last match versus the Kalil team which decided which team would take the first place crown, came down to the last court when the teams had split 2-2, anticipating the outcome of the last court still playing. Mara Roberts and Lisa Gibson were able to take down Laura Kahn and Ainslie Ellis 7-5, 7-6 to secure the local championship. The team continued it's winning streak through Districts versus Binghamton winning 4-1;and Regionals vs. Buffalo and Rochester, winning by one individual match. The sectionals brought some fierce competition from the New York City area, plus steaming hot weather!! The Sweet Spots competed hard but came up a bit short for the weekend. Notable was Betsy Dexter's performance, winning all singles matches she played!! Way to go Betsy!
Lesley Grants and Mara Roberts say of their season, "We could not be prouder of our team and our team’s success this season making it all the way to sectionals at Skytop where we had the opportunity to compete against such strong tennis teams and players. It takes a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work from each and every person on our team to have made it to this level two years in a row. We are supported by the best coach in women’s tennis, coach Shelley George, who is out there on the court with us taking us through drills each and every week, month after month, and we love working with her."
We feel grateful that we have a team of such strong and determined players who support each other not only on the court, but through life’s ups and downs off the court as well. The Syracuse Sweet Spots are a very special group of women!!”
CNYTA and the entire tennis community congratulate you on a memorable season!!
